Match play
Won by holes, not strokes — win more holes than your opponent.
In match play you battle hole by hole. The lowest score on a hole wins that hole; whoever's won the most holes wins the match. Your total score doesn't matter — only who took each hole.
How it works
Win a hole and you go "1 up"; lose one and you're "1 down"; equal scores halve the hole. Like a Nassau, GimmeTab runs three matches at once: front 9, back 9, and total 18.
Closed out
A match ends early once a side leads by more holes than are left — that's where "3 & 2" comes from (3 up with 2 to play). No need to finish out.
In GimmeTab
- Three segments (front / back / total), each its own stake.
- 1-v-1 or 2-v-2 teams (best ball wins the hole).
- Closes out automatically when a side can't be caught.
- Supports presses — manual or automatic at N down. How presses work →
- Handicaps are optional. Everyone plays off the lowest handicap in the match, so the best player gives shots, and each stroke lands on a specific hole — the hardest ones if you've entered the card's stroke index, otherwise spread evenly.
- Presses are straight up by default — a fresh even-money bet on the holes that are left — but you can switch on carry strokes into presses when you set the bet up.
- Needs hole-by-hole scores — a totals-only golfer can't be in a match.
